Driver's Education Requirements for persons under the age of 18
Wisconsin State Statute requires a person under the age of 18 to receive the following in order to obtain a Wisconsin Driver's License.
30 hours of classroom training.
The student must have at least 30 hours of classroom time. Any missed classroom time would have to be made up so that 30 hours of classroom time was received by the student.
6 hours of in-car driving with a licensed driving instructor
6 hours* of in-car observation time with a licensed driving instructor
* A student may substitute additional driving time for observation time at the rate of 1 hour of additional driving equals 2 hours of observation time. If a student were to take 9 hours of in-car driving, they would not be required to do observation time.
How to get the (temps) Instruction Permit
Here are the steps you need to take in order to get your Temporary Instruction Permit (Temps).
1. Complete the required classroom training.
If you are taking the Behind The Wheel (BTW) training with the same driving school as the classroom, you may get your temps after completing the required number of classroom hours set by the school. Most require that the student complete at least the first 4 days of classroom time.
If you are taking the BTW training with a different driving school then the one you are taking the classroom at, you must complete the entire 30 hours of classroom.
2. Be at least 15 ½ years of age.
3. Make sure your MV3001 Form (black and white application form) is signed by your Driver’s Education Instructor of the school that is providing the BTW training. You must have their signature in order to get your temps. If you go to the DMV without your Driver’s Ed Instructor’s signature, the DMV will not issue the temps.
Once your Driver’s Education Instructor signs this form, it is only good for 60 days. After 60 days, you will need to get a new MV3001 form from your Driver’s Education Instructor.
This form also needs to be signed by your parent or guardian. Your parent or guardian must sign the form in front of a notary public or the DMV personnel. Your parent can sign this form at the DMV when you go take the Temps Test.
4. You will need to find your Social Security Card. Make sure your Social Security Card is signed in ink before going to the DMV.
If you do not have your Social Security Card, you may take a paycheck stub or tax form with your number on. You can also contact the nearest Social Security Office and get a new Social Security Card or Social Security Number verification letter.
The Social Security Card should not be laminated.
5. You will also need to find your certified Birth Certificate. If you have a WI ID Card, take that with you to the DMV.
Make sure the Birth Certificate is an original or a certified copy. You can not use a photocopy of a Birth Certificate. The DMV will not accept the birth certificate with your foot prints on or a photocopy of one.
6. Go to the DMV and take the Temps Test. DMV SERVICE CENTERS
You must be at the DMV at least 1 hour before the closing time in order to take the test and have the DMV process your results and issue the Temps.
7. Once you have your TEMPS, you need to call the driving school to schedule your first road lesson within 30 days of getting the temps. If you fail to take a lesson within 60 days of getting the temps, your temps may be cancelled.
